Geography of Haryana


Haryana is a landlocked state of India. 27˚30’ to 30˚35’ North 74˚28’ to 77˚36’ East. The altitude of Haryana varies between 700 ft to 3600ft. Haryana is plain except northern Shivalik Hills ranges and southern Aravali hills. It is part of the Sindhu Gangetic plain that is formed of silts of Himalayan Rivers. So that its shape is like a saucer.

Rain in Haryana

  • More than 200 cm – Hilly range of Northern Haryana
  • Less than 35cm – Southwestern (Hisar & Sirsa)
  • Average rainfall in Haryana 30-110cm.

Types of Soil in Haryana

Haryana state is situated towards the depressions of the rivers Ganges and Indus. Therefore, Soil is formed almost entirely of alluvium. On average 80% of Haryana Soil is low in organic carbon content 18% is medium and 2% is high. In south-western parts, a great deal of windblown sand has been piled up in the form of sand dunes. The only part useful for cultivation in this region is plains.

It can be divided into three types.

  • Plain
  • Hilly
  • Fine sand/desert sands

Khadir Region: The plains are low lying next to a river. It sometimes includes portions of former river-beds that became available for agriculture when the river changed course. It is moisture retentive and sticky when wet. Khadir soil consists of new alluvium soil deposits and is often very fertile.

For Example: Ganga Basin, Yamuna Basin

Bangar: Bangar plains are more upland and consist of older alluvial soil.

Types of Crop in Haryana

There are two types of crops in Haryana which are Rabi & Kharif.

  • Rabi (Asadi) – This crop grows in winter. It is sown in October-November and harvested in March-April.
  • Example of Rabi Crops: Wheat, barley, gram, mustard are grown in the rabi crop.
  • Kharif (Sawani) – This crop is generally sown in June-July when the monsoon is active and harvested in September-October when the onset of winter.
  • Some Examples of Kharif Crops: Jowar, millet, guar, moong, maize, cotton, etc.
  • Paddy and sugarcane (reed) are also grown in areas with good water availability.

There are mainly five lakes in Haryana, as follow:
